Federal Government to Build Nationwide Communications Network

The FCC’s auction has raised more than enough funds for the federal government to build a nationwide communications network for first responders, according to the National Journal. “The network will help police, firefighters, and other public-safety officials from different agencies communicate with each other during emergencies. It is intended to handle high-speed data, so officials should be able to send photos and videos to each other, helping them coordinate their responses,” Brendan Sasso of the National Journal explained. At every convention over the past few years, this idea, also referred to as FirstNet, has been tossed around. The only reason there was skepticism is because no one knew where the government would get the money to fund such a project. Now that they have raised over $16 billion in the AWS-3 auction, FirstNet, which is estimated to cost $7, will be completed. “It will still be several years before any first responder is able to take advantage of FirstNet. An advisory board made up of federal, state, and local officials is still overseeing the planning of the network,” Sasso explained. But now there will be consistent communication between emergency responders.
