Saudi Aramco is set to test its 5G mesh-like network in the Middle East Gulf. Riviera reported that Aramco signed a memorandum of understanding with Inmarsat Maritime to undertake trials, delivering high-bandwidth connectivity to offshore operations, including benefits such as intelligent remote maintenance and remote operations.
“Our technologies provide the ingredients for a bespoke solution,” said Inmarsat Maritime president Ben Palmer. “This new 5G mesh technology will be a significant step in helping Aramco maximize site efficiency, improve sustainability, provide a better experience for crew and protect the business from cyber attacks.”
Aramcos’s mesh technology is designed to provide high-speed communications while meeting the demands of the region’s climate, including extreme heat, sandstorms, wind, and water evaporation, reported Riviera. In February, the integrated energy and chemical company completed tests of the mesh over water in the U.K. Aramco is now moving on to harsher weather conditions in the Middle East Gulf, aiming to test the capabilities of the 5G mobile integrated access and backhaul network throughout 2024.
Riviera reported that the mesh deployment will be a world-first for long-range, high-throughput beyond the maximum 1 km range. This network will link oil and gas production platforms and provide hubs for vessel connectivity with backup geostationary satellite communications, Riviera reported.
