Officials in Washington County, New York, are looking into improving communications and dispatch for public safety. To do this, the county’s Public Safety Committee agreed to spend about $96,000 to study upgrades to the 250-foot tower that houses the county’s telecommunications equipment. The Post Star reported, “The county is also analyzing what it would cost to build a new tower. Board of Supervisors Chairman James Lindsay said a tower 50 feet taller would eliminate a lot of the county’s communication problems by providing a clearer line of sight. As it stands now, the topography of the county hinders the signal.” New state codes regarding towers go into effect next January, and officials want to know what needs to be done to the towers to meet the new standards. This will cost about $18,000. Hebron Supervisor Brian Campbell said the existing tower is crowded by the county’s equipment and cellular companies’ antennas. If a new tower were built, the county could lease more space and bring in additional revenue.
