Africa’s tallest mountain and top tourist destination, Kilimanjaro, is now connected to high-speed internet. Republicworld reported that state-run telecom companies made the project a reality for the over 19,300-foot-tall mountain in Tanzania.

Nape Nnauye, the Minister of Information, Communication & ICT of the Government of Tanzania, said in a tweet on August 16, “Today Up on Mount Kilimanjaro: I am hoisting high-speed internet communications (Broadband) on the ROOF OF AFRICA.” He added, “Tourists can now communicate worldwide from the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.”

To make a worldwide connection on Africa’s Rooftop possible, Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation Limited completed the National ICT Broadband Backbone project. Prior to completion, approximately 50,000 tourists visiting the mountain annually had no way to connect to the outside world past the 6,100-foot high mark. Nnauye added that tourists – who contribute $1.4 billion to the country’s GDP – would soon be able to access connectivity up to Uhuru peak and the mountain’s summit come October.
