American Innovation Digitizing the Tower Industry

The word “consilience” doesn’t come up in everyday conversation for most folks. But for Consilience Analytics, or CA, it is a mission. By definition, the word refers to the principle of using data from independent, unrelated sources to converge on strong conclusions. To CA, it means leveraging multiple sources of information around digital twins to provide accurate insights for infrastructure owners, MVNOs, and service providers.

“Technology is advancing rapidly, creating opportunities to scale network deployment, manage telecom assets, and provide engineering-grade accuracy and analysis. Some in the industry believe that providing a digital twin and requiring the customer to search for value is acceptable. Our differentiation is in providing actionable insights and integrating them into existing MVNOs, asset owners, and service provider workflows. We also believe in the power of data aggregation across multiple sources to drive value to our customers. A recent example is integrating FCC asset and floodplain data to provide new insights in network deployment for our clients,” said Rich Hofer, Vice President of Product and Engineering Development.

The future impact of digitization on the tower industry became apparent to the founder and CEO, Matt Sheskey, while he was developing tower sites in Puerto Rico in 2019. The need for a more comprehensive site analysis to streamline digital deployment workflow came into focus when CA was selected to take an innovative approach to building a nationwide 5G network, according to Wade Collins, Vice President of Business Development.

“We’ve completed tens of thousands of towers with a U.S.-based major national carrier and learned a lot from that experience,” Collins said. “It is very rewarding to work with a strategic partner to help execute what we understand to be one of the fastest and most cost-effective greenfield network deployments in U.S. history.”

5G Network Transformation Coinciding with Digital Transformation

Network infrastructure is the backbone of communications in the U.S. Carriers need to quickly deploy as new technology evolves and infrastructure owners need to maximize the value of their assets. CA’s approach to digitization enables both. Tower companies are making strides in digitizing assets, but Hofer envisions a future where deploying new or upgraded equipment can be as simple as remotely selecting a site or available space, performing an analysis or inspection, digitally adding equipment with site engineering, and securing lease space.

The Differentiator – Flight to Insights

CA provides an end-to-end solution with the option of a full-service platform, from drone flights and data collection to a comprehensive portal with 2D & 3D renderings with the option to order validated engineering grade deliverables on-demand that include: Space Availability & Square Inch Calculations for Rad Centers; Pre and Post Construction Comparisons; Variance Reports; Site Plans; Mount Analyses; and a climb and drone enhanced TIA solution with partner FieldSync. “Customers can pick and choose from our service options to best serve their needs,” Collins said. “Our goal is to ensure that all information is accurate, well-organized, and easily accessible in CA’s user-friendly web portal, or we can deliver data to a company’s internal enterprise software.”

The endgame for CA is accuracy; to produce insights that are as accurate as the physical information a climber might provide, as discussed in a recently published whitepaper with Bentley’s OpenTower. “It’s a holistic approach to solve the demand for tower site accuracy, speed, and cost containment for multiple personas in and beyond the telecom industry,” Collins said.

Consilience is proud to be a U.S.-based company, calling Greenwood Village, Colorado home. It is founder-led and self-funded, “creating a unique opportunity to drive profitable innovation while constantly looking ahead of the curve.” CA prioritizes customer data first and recently deployed services at a world-class Denver-based data center, providing secure hosting and processing of data.
