Neighbors in Bethel, Connecticut, are ecstatic to learn that AT&T has withdrawn its name from the application to build a new cell tower on Codfish Hill Road. A group called “No Codfish Tower” celebrated this win, although they realize it might only be a “small victory.” “The war is not over yet, but this is a battle that we won,” said Steve Suriano, who lives about a mile away from the proposed site. (News-Times) AT&T submitted a letter withdrawing its “intervention without prejudice.” Florida Tower Partners is looking to construct the tower, and although AT&T no longer wants to take part in the project, Verizon still plans to use the structure. “AT&T continues to have a need for new infrastructure to provide reliable service in eastern Bethel, and the adjacent area of Newtown,” Daniel Laub wrote. “It is anticipated that AT&T would use the proposed facility, if approved, in the future.” The “Stop the Codfish Cell Tower” Facebook group recently explained, “The hearing is still happening and Verizon has not yet backed out—however AT&T dropping out sends a significant message about ‘need.’ It’s a huge piece of evidence in our case. The hearing is in just a few days, and the council wants to hear from us.” The Facebook page also explained that Melanie Bachman, Staff Attorney and Acting Executive Director of the Connecticut Siting Council, said via email, “The evidentiary hearing will conclude with the appearance and cross examination of Verizon, which will include substantial discussion of Verizon’s coverage maps. AT&T has withdrawn from the proceeding, which means they withdrew all of their exhibits, and will no longer be participating in any further hearings on this docket application. The Siting Council takes its charge very seriously and follows a deliberate, statutory process to ensure all decisions are rendered fairly upon a record of substantial evidence, including, but not limited to, comments and statements submitted by concerned residents and the public.” The Council will meet on July 14 to discuss the application.
