AT&T is constructing towers to serve rural Lafayette County (Mississippi) under its Fixed Wireless Internet service program to provide better service to residents, reported The Oxford Eagle. The program, part of AT&T’s FCC Connect America Fund commitment, has brought better service to 18 states so far, including Mississippi.

AT&T plans to reach over 133,000 rural homes and businesses with the modern technology across Mississippi by 2020. “We have committed to reaching at least 40 percent of those locations by the end of this year,” said Mayo Flynt, state president of AT&T Mississippi on Monday. “We’re really excited about this program.”

Six towers are being used in the area to service Lafayette County in Gault, Paris, Abbeville, Water Ford, and Lafayette Spring.  Three additional towers have been put to use in northeastern Yalobusha County. “Customers can stream TV shows or movies, do online classes, or just browse the web,” Flynt said.

The program operates via the connection from a wireless tower to a fixed antenna on customers’ homes or businesses that are located within a five mile radius, depending on topography. The basic cost for the internet varies from $50 to $70, based on whether the customer bundles with other services and pays either month-to-month or under an annual contract.
