London is on a mission to become carbon-neutral by 2050, and has been named Europe’s number one smart city, according to a new study by real estate firm ProptechOS. England’s capital boasts the most 5G towers, EV charging stations, and green infrastructure, making it the “best-prepared city for a smart future,” reported E-Magazine.
ProptechOS’ study reviewed 100 capital cities in Europe and the U.S., analyzing which were the “best adapted to emerging technologies and prepared for a smarter future.” The study looked at 11 key indicators of a smart city, as defined by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
London achieved an overall score of 73.7 out of 100, with Amsterdam coming in second and Berlin in third. E-Magazine reported that London’s average broadband speed is 82.7 Mbps.
England’s capital also leads the way in the green infrastructure category, including “green roofs, living walls and access to outdoor green space.” London has more green-certified buildings than any other European or U.S. city, with 4,948 green-certified buildings. “The cities that will thrive in the future will be the ones best adapted to our new and greener ways of living,” Dr. Erik Wallin, founder and chief ecosystem officer at ProptechOS, said.
Although London secured accolades from the ProptechOS study, the city lags behind the U.S. and China in their 5G rollout and with tech jobs. In terms of tech jobs per 10,000 people, London only ranks in 51st place because of its large population, reported E-Magazine.
