As part of its Broadband Strategic Plan, Loudoun County’s Board of Supervisors finance committee approved spending an estimated $15.5 million to replace the county’s aging fiber infrastructure. According to a Virginia county report, the existing infrastructure is nearing the end of its life expectancy and the goal is to provide broadband internet services to unserved and underserved areas in western Loudoun.
Lumos Networks, Inc. is currently under contract to update the school system, providing an opportunity for county government to monitor and bring down costs over the long-term by utilizing the same contract.
The extra fiber is expected to make it more affordable for private internet service providers to bring in broadband services.
An estimated $4.8 million in additional funding is under consideration for the next fiscal budget for five county facilities that are not included in the contract: the Bluemont Community Center, the Philomont Community Center, Philomont Fire & Rescue, Loudoun Heights Fire & Rescue, and the Loudoun Heights Public Safety Radio Tower.
