Start-up businesses operating in the 5G world will soon have a Seattle home with the new 5G Open Innovation Lab. The Lab brings together the resources of T-Mobile, the University of Washington, and the City of Bellevue in a project that will benefit health care, retail, transportation and energy providers, reports the Seattle Times.

The venture, which also has the backing of NASA and Intel, will match 5G startups with investors and technology labs that will test their products.

Businesses committed to operating in a 5G environment will receive a boost from the Lab that should help launch their businesses. The project also seeks to employ students interested in navigating through 5G technology.

“The thing that I’m most interested in pursuing inside the lab is what are the new markets or new businesses that could be created because of what 5G networks will be able to support,” said lab general partner Jim Brisimitzis. “5G is essentially a new, fresh perspective … and as a result of that we do expect that industries and job opportunities will change and evolve alongside them.” He added that Seattle’s cloud-tech community made it an ideal location to host the Innovation Lab.

Start-ups interested in participating can submit their applications later this month. If all goes according to plan, the Innovation Lab will open in January 2020.
