Four companies collaborated to set a world record in Rome (Italy), reported ISPreview. TIM, Ericsson, Casa Systems, and Qualcomm used a radio antenna and the 5G mmWave (mmW) band (26GHz) to reach broadband speeds of 1Gbps over a distance of 6.5km (4.03 miles).

5G mmW are known to travel short distances due to their weak signals but can carry massive amounts of data. ISPreview reported that 5G is now traveling farther than ever imagined with the recent collaborative test over a line-of-sight Fixed Wireless Access network.

The test harnessed Ericsson’s new 5G mmWave high power antenna-integrated radio AIR 5322, equipped with Ericsson’s extended range software. It also utilized Casa Systems’ new AurusAI, a high-power piece of 5G mmWave customer premise equipment, and equipped with a Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ X55 5G Modem-RF System with Qualcomm® QTM527 extended-range mmWave antenna module.

The goal of the setup was to investigate use by homes and businesses. Another trial is scheduled near Turin, Italy, where local broadband and cell service remains inadequate, reported ISPreview
