Carriers will be able to monetize their 5G services faster with a new Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML)-based application, known as Project Marconi, a collaboration between Capgemini and Intel Architecture. The technology increases the amount of data a cell can handle and boosts subscribers’ quality of experience using real-time predictive analytics, according to news announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

“Machine learning can be deployed for intelligent decision-making on the RAN without any additional hardware requirement,” said Walid Negm, Chief Research and Innovation Officer at Capgemini Engineering. “This makes it cost efficient in the short run and future proof in the long run as we move into cloud-native RAN implementations.”

Capgemini’s solution on Intel Architecture, which conforms to Open RAN guidelines, allows operators to serve more subscribers, while launching Industry 4.0 services such as enhanced Mobile Broadband and Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communications use cases.

“Our collaboration delivered ultra-fast interference data to enhance the Open-Source ML libraries resulting in the intelligent RAN, which can predict and quickly react to subscriber coverage requirements while reducing TCO,” said Cristina Rodriguez, VP of Wireless Access Network Division at Intel.

The AI powered predictive analytical solution forecasts and assigns the appropriate MCS (modulation and coding scheme) values for signal transmission through forecasting of the user signal quality and mobility patterns accurately. Therefore, the RAN can intelligently schedule medium access control resources to achieve up to 40 percent more accurate MCS prediction and yield 15 percent better spectrum efficiency. As a result, it delivers faster data speeds, better and more consistent QoE to subscribers and robust coverage for use cases that rely on low latency connectivity such as robotics-based manufacturing and V2X (vehicle-to-everything).

The RAN-application is optimized with Intel AI Software and 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors.
