AT&T to Bury Fiber-Optic Infrastructure in Louisiana

After Hurricane Ida caused significant damage to its Louisiana Infrastructure in August, AT&T is set to begin a multi-million project to harden its network in the region by burying fiber-optic infrastructure previously deployed on poles across some of the hardest hit areas. The project is targeted for completion in the first half of 2022, with a majority of the work scheduled for completion this year.

AT&T’s fiber-optic network, which connects businesses and residents in communities across the state and provides backhaul for its wireless network, suffered multiple cuts in storm-impacted areas. This initiative will help enhance network resiliency in future storms.

“Having said that, we learn from every disaster event and make enhancements, and we are doing the same here,” Sonia Perez, President AT&T Southeast States, said. “This critical project is the beginning of our work to apply constructive learnings from the impacts of Hurricane Ida.”

The primary focus of the project is work in parts of the Bayou parishes and in and around the New Orleans area, including Jefferson, Lafourche, Orleans, St. Charles, St. James and Terrebonne parishes.
