Italian satellite broadcaster, Sky Italia, has launched its “Sky WiFi” service in 26 cities, reports Telecompaper. The Sky WiFi Hub developed by Comcast is slated to reach 120 locations in the coming months. Initially, the service will only be offered to Sky subscribers.
Sky CEO Maximo Ibarra stated his company’s foray into Italy’s fixed broadband market is “an important step both for our company and for Sky family members.” He added Sky plans to “make a significant contribution to the expansion of ultra-broadband [in Italy], a need that the emergency we have faced in recent months has made clear to us all.”
To tempt people to sign on with Sky WiFi, the company is offering free coverage for the first three months for existing subscribers. Additionally, the activation fee for “Sky WiFi Smart” will be waived, and price breaks at half off will be available for the activation of premium connections “Sky WiFi Ultra” and “Sky WiFi Ultra Plus.” A triple-play option (voice, broadband and Sky Q TV) is available in select cities.
Praising the new delivery system, Sky Italia revealed it took a team of over 200 engineers to build the “Sky Ultra Network” fiber infrastructure. The end result was an international merging of technological know-how from Sky’s UK operations, and Comcast in the US. Sky WiFi subscribers will be able to connect with a 1 Gbps download and 300 Mbps upload connection.
