After its launch as a 5G rollout city, Buffalo Common Council (NY) has voted to rein in the telecoms. With herds of cell towers and small cells poised to migrate through the New York city, concerns were expressed that the provider population may grow out of control. According to WBFO-FM, local legislators are worried that people may worry about the extra transmission structures.
“We need some layer of protection for our community members and residents and constituents to have, to make sure that folks are not just putting these cell phone towers up without notifying the community,” explained Councilman Ulysses Wingo. “So with this moratorium, there’s just some extra layer we’re adding to this process to ensure that the folks in those communities are aware they are going up.”
In the past, council members declined to comment on matters involving cell towers. However, Councilmember Joel Feroleto said that it was important to take a closer look at how many towers will be needed to populate the landscape, now, before a wave of construction begins. Invoking a moratorium will give the council extra time to ponder Buffalo’s 5G future. While the moratorium is not a certainty, it will be up for discussion at the council’s next meeting.
