Carbon Hill and other parts of Walker County, AL, are the chosen ones for an AT&T rural Internet access trial.   AT&T Product Manager Bill Robbins told CorridorMessenger.com that the test will use wireless technology and involves a professionally installed antenna mounted on the outside of the home.

Residents who are eligible for the three-month program will receive high-speed Internet for three months; speeds of no less than 10 megabits per second; and $100 from AT&T.  About 65 households will be chosen on a first-come, first-served basis, however there are some requirements. They include: setting up a two-hour time window with an AT&T representative for installation of a directional antenna; having a resident 18 or older present with no animals present; having an Internet-ready device, such as a smart phone, tablet or computer; and keeping existing home Internet service since participants will not be able to keep the testing equipment after the trial. A first survey will be completed a few weeks after installation, with a final survey at the end of the three-month trial period. Residents will be asked what they think of the AT&T service and usage during the trial.

Robbins told CorridorMessenger.com that homes many not work with the directional antennae required once the technician comes to install the equipment, however those residents will receive $50 for their time. “Other participants will receive a $50 payment after their antenna is professionally installed. A second $50 payment from AT&T will be paid after participants complete two online surveys regarding the service,” Robbins said.

Eligible areas include as far west as Glen Allen to south to Highway 102 and east of Carbon Hill, but not all the way to Jasper. To find out if you are an eligible household, Robbins will be at the Bill and Sons grocery store in Carbon Hill from noon to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 16, and Thursday, December 17. He urged people to call (608) 722-0409 or email wr7215@att.com.
