Cell Tower Modeling Goes 3D

While a photo-shopped rendering of a balloon test will give you an idea of what a cell tower might look like in the landscape, HERE Geodata Models creates a 3D model that crystallizes that visualization. GeoSpatialWorld.net reports on this Netherlands-based company that created a new way to look at 5G development.

“It’s an exciting time for the telecom industry, with the focus on delivering outstanding network services today while investing in 5G and advanced network capabilities that are powering the future of consumer and business IoT,” explained the company’s Chief Technology Officer, Giovanni Lanfranchi.

“HERE Geodata Models provides the detail mobile network operators need to accelerate the design, deployment and benefit of 5G networks worldwide.”

The geospatial models include accurate data about building heights and placement, utility poles, roads, trees, and the surrounding terrain. HERE also maps out the strength and penetration of cell signals, allowing telecoms to plot the optimum locations for additional cell towers. The program can also monitor an existing network and highlight strengths and weaknesses of transmissions.

Other industry leaders such as Nokia and Kinetica are already on board with HERE and mobile network data across 196 countries is ready for analysis. The precision viewable on a 3D scale could potentially streamline 5G advancement as new communities wonder how 5G would fit in, and telecoms calculate the most efficient way to deliver those services.
