As 5G is continuing its nationwide rollout, engineering models show that, in most cases, mmWave connections generally work better outside than they do indoors. Samsung says that its Link Cell technology addresses and improves delivery speeds and latency issues within buildings, reports HotHardware.com. The units themselves are designed to be discreet, and can be placed throughout a building to improve 5G performance.

Qualcomm’s 5G RAN platform hosts the Link Cell technology and Verizon will be the first U.S. carrier to utilize the node. “Verizon continues to rapidly advance our 5G deployment, and the addition of indoor cell sites will extend the availability of the fastest 5G service in the U.S. This is a key step in providing industry-changing, scalable, latency-sensitive, robust 5G solutions for enterprises,” stated Adam Koeppe, Senior Vice President of Technology Planning and Development at Verizon.

Samsung describes Link Cell as self-adjusting, and capable of making corrections for optimal RF performance. At this point in its development, Link Cell is designed to work for businesses, not residential structures. Link Cell relies on a business’ underlying Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) network that makes low-band and mid-band 5G available throughout a facility.

“The first version of Samsung’s Link Cell will support 28 GHz,” explains Samsung. “It has the capability to combine four 100 MHz bandwidth of frequencies, offering high capacity and ultra-fast download speeds. Moreover, it brings together a radio, antenna and digital unit into one compact box, and is less than 4 liters in volume, one of the smallest in the industry.”
