While the next-generation in wireless, 5G, is still in its infancy, China, which has been a leader in 5G development, has launched the world’s first 6G satellite. According to TechWire, China successfully sent the satellite into orbit on November 6.

The rest of the world, the U.S. included, is working to roll out 5G and has yet to agree on the specifications for 6G, reported TechWire. 5G is faster than 4G, but 6G is anticipated to have the capabilities of downloading a high-definition movie in just eight seconds and 1,500 high-resolution images in under a minute. Exactly how fast the 6G bands are is unknown, but estimates put speeds somewhere between 100 and 500 GHz, or 100 times faster than 5G, reported TechWire.

Additional world players are getting in on 6G planning. In the U.S., Google and Apple joined a new 6G industry group called “the Next G Alliance.” TechWire reported Japan is planning a strategy for “post-5G” [6G] that would increase 5G speeds 10-fold by 2030. South Korea is also planning a 6G pilot project slated for 2026.
