UPDATE The long anticipated Mahwah, New Jersey cell tower remains in the concept stage. However, both the Township Council and prospective contractor, Wireless Edge, have agreed that future construction will fall to someone else. According to NorthJersey.com, the two parties have reached a mutual termination agreement.

Declan O’Scanlon Jr., chief executive officer of FSD Enterprises in Red Bank, NJ, will be coming on board to help the Township find a new carrier. O’Scanlon is expected to have a recommendation and timetable ready in two weeks and intends to appear at the next Township Council meeting.

The Mahwah cell tower project has been a subject of debate for approximately 15 years, leaving 5,500 residents with a service gap. Poor coverage has affected connectivity for residents along a two mile stretch along the township’s northern border. Over the years, there have been delays resulting from environmental concerns, as well as residents challenging the placement of the proposed tower. Additional delays from pandemic work stoppage, and now a change in vendors, have added to the delays faced by both providers and residents.

“The Tappan Zee Bridge was built quicker than this tower,” quipped resident, Robert Goldberg. Counsel Brian Campion, who was instrumental in ending the agreement with Wireless Edge, was asked if there was a way to speed up the process. In response, Campion said, “I don’t negotiate with carriers.”
