There’s a need for a tower along the Route 90 corridor in Maryland, as calls are often dropped, and Verizon Wireless is trying to build a solution but has so far been voted down. The Worcester County Commissioners denied a request to install a pole at Ocean Pines Wastewater Treatment Plant because “the people that live in that district do not want it,” according to Commissioner Jim Bunting.
The Dispatch reported that Bunting and Commissioner Chip Bertino are against a tower project. “We’ve had that conversation multiple times,” Bertino said. “How many times does this thing have to be pushed down?” Bunting added that the discussion around towers “should be dead…and it shouldn’t be brought up anymore.”
According to Verizon, the wastewater treatment plant is the best location for a tower, but Bertino and Bunting are vehemently against it. Commissioner Joe Mitrecic suggested inviting Verizon to discuss the feasibility of a tower at the Isle of Wight facility or elsewhere along Route 90, according to The Dispatch.
According to Commissioner Josh Nordstrom, a tower is needed. “There are lots of areas in this county that have poor cell phone coverage or no cell phone coverage,” he said. “This needs to be a total county approach. Every inch of Worcester County should have a strong signal.”
Since commissioners were split on the issue, they agreed to a compromise. The Dispatch reported they would send a letter to Verizon requesting a discussion.
