More companies are deciding not to attend the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2020 because of fear concerning the Coronavirus. Yesterday we reported Ericsson, which would have been one of the largest exhibitors, is not going. The list of companies not going is growing, including Amdocs, LG, NTT DoCoMo, Viavi Solutions, Amazon (AWS) and Sony. Yesterday, CommScope said the company is cancelling its plans to attend the show slated for February 24 – 27, in Barcelona.

Inside Towers has heard from at least one company who said it would not attend without AWS present.

CommScope said cancelling its physical presence in Barcelona was not a decision it made lightly. “Although the likelihood of contracting the virus is low, we will not risk the health of our employees, nor the business impact that would result if a quarantine were ordered,” the company stated. CommScope said it’s been in touch with GSMA throughout this process and appreciate all that they’ve done to ensure the safety of attendees.

All of the companies cited above listed similar reasons for their withdrawal saying the health and safety of their employees and customers was their overriding concern. Instead, CommScope and others are exploring virtual tradeshow and meeting options to showcase their wares.
