AT&T proposed building a tower on New Castle Area Schools District Property (PA) and applied for a conditional use permit due to zoning restrictions. Last week, the City Council unanimously rejected the request, reported the New Castle News.

District administrators supported AT&T’s request due to the lease agreement, which would have generated $24,000 in revenue in year one and was proposed to increase by two percent in subsequent years.

The lease, as written, would automatically renew for four additional five-year terms.

According to the News, the project brought opposition from many residents. However, School solicitor Charles Sapienza assured the school board that if AT&T files an appeal, the school district will join in the lawsuit on the company’s behalf to contest the decision.

AT&T has thirty days to file an appeal regarding the permit denial. Regarding the tower, Sapienza said, “We want it to happen. I hope they [AT&T] want to pursue it.”
