pulsepoint2Sometimes it takes a village to save a life, and in the case of the Maryland-based Prince George’s County EMS Department (PGFD), a new PulsePoint Respond app could be key. PGFD, along with PulsePoint and the CTIA Wireless Foundation have teamed up to bring the PulsePoint Respond app to the people of Upper Marlboro, MD, according to the Journal of Emergency Medical Services (JEMS). The announcement was made at this week’s event at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex in Landover.

According to JEMS, PulsePoint Respond helps CPR-trained citizens and off-duty professionals provide “critical assistance to cardiac arrest victims” by alerting them of nearby cardiac events and helping them find available Automated External Defibrillators nearby. The app can be used by anyone trained in CPR.

Fire Chief Marc Bashoor told JEMS that he was proud to be the first Fire/EMS Department in the NCR to implement PulsePoint. “It gives our residents and visitors and the ability to know when a cardiac arrest is occurring close by, to respond quickly, and to attempt potentially lifesaving CPR while our paramedics travel to the scene.”

Additionally, PulsePoint’s app lets users know of recent and active PGFD incidents within a countywide area, amounting to 400 or more calls a day, JEMS reported. Richard Price, president of the PulsePoint Foundation, told JEMS that the app will put people in the right place at the right time. Athena Polydorou, executive director of CTIA Wireless Foundation, echoed Price’s sentiments, stating that “by connecting those in critical need with CPR-trained individuals, the PulsePoint app is saving lives across America. We’re proud to be a key sponsor of PulsePoint so that Prince George’s County residents will benefit from this inventive app that leverages Americans’ mobile-first lifestyles.”

PulsePoint Respond app is free and available for iPhone and Android and can be downloaded from the iTunes Store and Google Play.
