Vital statistics: Town makes $15-$20k in annual revenue

Earlier this week, Lake Success officials heard a proposition from ExteNet Systems – a company that designs, builds, and manages distributed networks – to install 13 distributed antenna system (DAS) nodes to improve cell phone coverage, reported The Island Now.

Lake Success has struggled with cell phone coverage and Mayor Adam Hoffman told The Island Now, “It’s getting worse according to cell carriers … As people use cell phones more, it tends to make things worse with cell phone service.”

According to Hoffman, the village has investigated how to improve coverage, but “towers proved infeasible,” so alternative options were assessed. “In the past, we were looking at cell towers,” Hoffman said, “but it became a really complicated issue of where to put it.”

In addition to providing residents with better services, the DAS nodes could also provide the village $15,000 to $20,000 in revenue. “We’re not doing it for the money, honestly,” Hoffman said, “we’re doing it for the residents.”

Verizon Wireless will be the first to come aboard, as ExteNet Systems has a contract with them, but other carriers are expected to follow, according to Hoffman. Projected completion of the project is some time in 2018. It must first go through the Planning Board, environmental review, and other levels of approval.
