Ericsson Trying to Take Another Bite Out of Apple In Court

Ericsson and Apple are at it again, in court. Reuters reported that the Swedish manufacturer has filed another set of patent infringement lawsuits against the iPhone creator. Ericsson claims Apple owes the company royalty payment for the use of 5G wireless patents in iPhones. According to Reuters, Ericsson charges between $2.5 to $5 for every 5G handset, so there is significant revenue to be made (or lost)

Both companies have already filed lawsuits against each other in the U.S. as negotiations failed over the renewal of a seven-year licensing contract first struck in 2015. Ericsson filed the first of the suits in October 2021, claiming Apple was trying to improperly cut down its royalty rates. Apple then countersued in December 2021, accusing Ericcson of “strong-arm tactics” to renew patents.

“Since the prior agreement has expired, and we have been unable to reach agreement on the terms and scope of a new license, Apple is now using our technology without a license,” an Ericsson spokesman said.
