Since the onset of the pandemic, Inside Towers has reported on many acts of vandalism related to towers and telecommunications equipment, with many incidents occurring across Europe. Now, EU associations are going public to debunk 5G myths which spurred 288 arson attacks and violence against telecom workers. The European Telecommunications Network Operators’ Association (ETNO) and GSMA released a new guide on 5G highlighting the economic and social benefits of the next generation of wireless while exposing misinformation.

The guide — available currently in four languages with more coming soon — presents research from national and international health authorities as well as insights from top economic studies. It also gives examples of the broad and varied use of 5G across Europe, as the technology is available in 30 countries from over 80 operators.

Some key information communicated in the guide includes health facts plus economic and environmental benefits:

Health Facts

  • 5G complies with international safety guidelines
  • The WHO clearly states: “Provided that the overall exposure remains below international guidelines, no consequences for public health are anticipated,” ; this includes humans, plants, and animals.
  • 5G helps deliver real-time emergency care

 Economic and Environmental Benefits

  • 5G adoption has the potential to reduce global CO2 emissions by 20 percent by the year 2030
  • Countries are using 5G to develop “smart” universities, create high-tech jobs, and support virtual tourism
