The FCC is looking for volunteers to serve on a telecommunications Interagency Working Group. The point, according to the Commission, is to develop recommendations to address the workforce needs of the telecom industry for the 5G buildout, including safety. This is part of the instructions to the agency in the infrastructure package that the President recently signed into law.

The Commission, in partnership with the Labor Department, must form the group by January 14, 2022. The task force must produce a report with its recommendations not later than one year after being established.

Nominations for membership are due to the FCC by December 20 of this year. Submissions must be made by email to: TelecomWorkForceWG@fcc.gov. Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel will choose four members from outside organizations. The FCC is looking for a representative from a telecom industry association, an Indian Tribe or Tribal organization, a rural telecom carrier and a telecom contractor firm.

In addition, the working group will be comprised of membership selected from individuals or organizations: a representative of a registered apprenticeship program in construction or maintenance, appointed by the Secretary of Labor; a public interest advocate for tower climber safety, appointed by the Secretary of Labor; a representative of a labor organization representing the telecommunications workforce, appointed by the Secretary of Labor; and a representative of an institution of higher education, appointed by the Secretary of Education.

Aside from the FCC, membership will include a representative of the Directorate of OSHA, appointed by the Secretary of Labor; a representative of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, appointed by the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information; and a representative of the Department of Education, appointed by the Secretary of Education.
