The FCC will have a new chief economist as of Tuesday, September 3. He’s Dr. Jeffrey Prince, who’s currently a professor of Business Economics and Public Policy at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business. Dr. Prince’s research at Indiana primarily focuses on the fields of industrial organization and applied econometrics. He has published works on telecom bundling, dynamic demand for computers, internet adoption and usage, and the inception of online/offline product competition.
The job entails advising the chairman, commissioners, bureaus, and offices on economic issues and typically lasts one year. Dr. Prince will work within the recently established Office of Economics and Analytics.
In making the appointment, Chairman Ajit Pai praised Prince’s experience and research on the telecommunications market and internet adoption, which he said will be of great value to the Commission. “I’m pleased that Dr. Prince has agreed to join the agency and look forward to his input on the economic aspects of important policy issues such as closing the digital divide and auction design and execution,” stated Pai.
Prince replaces Dr. Babette Boliek, who’s returning to Pepperdine University as her FCC term ends. Pai thanked Boliek for her work, saying, “her keen understanding of the intersection of law and economics proved to be an incredible asset as the Commission was creating the Office of Economics and Analytics. Many of the items we worked on and processes we established over the past year were greatly strengthened by her input.”
