FCC Warns Public of Imposter Emergency Broadband Program Website

The FCC is warning consumers about a fake website that claims to offer enrollment in the agency’s Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) Program. The fake one, purportedly run by “WiFi Freedom USA,” falsely declared it administered the EBB. That included collecting consumers’ personal information and offering connected devices and services, according to the Commission.

The FCC and USAC, the real EBB administrator for the Commission, had the website disabled and the known social media page removed. The FCC is working with law enforcement agencies to address the issue.

The real website for consumers to enroll in the EBB is: GetEmergencyBroadband.org.

Consumers can also contact a participating provider directly, but they should first verify that a provider is approved to participate in the program by visiting https://www.fcc.gov/emergency-broadband-benefit-providers and searching by their state or territory. Consumers can also apply by mail.

The FCC advises those who provided personal information to WiFi Freedom USA to visit IdentityTheft.gov. Those who made payments to the fake site should contact their bank to see if there are any remedies available. Those who suspect they were deceived can also file a report about government imposter fraud with the Federal Trade Commission at Reportfraud.ftc.gov and get information about how to recover money.
