Firefighters are continuing to keep the recent area wildfire under control in the Old Faithful area of Yellowstone National Park, as the fire has increased in size to 960 acres, according to KECI-TV.
A statement by the National Park Service summarized the efforts to curtail the blaze: “Two additional engines arrived on Saturday to support firefighters strengthening protection around key Old Faithful infrastructure. Crews finished the first phase of chipping at the water treatment plant and continued cutting timber around the cell tower.”
The Park Service continued: “Work will continue on Sunday near an above ground power line, substation, and park cabins. A park resource team finished an archeological survey in the Old Faithful developed area and will now focus on mapping sensitive riparian habitat and rare plants. This information will help the incident management team minimize impacts to these important natural resources.”
The National Park Service reports the Grand Loop Road between Old Faithful and West Thumb Junction is open, but may close at any time if fire activity increases. Many of the trails and campsites around Shoshone Lake and Lone Star Geyser are closed. Trailheads on the Grand Loop Road between Old Faithful and West Thumb Junction remain closed to the public.
