In an effort to “Be There” for America’s first responders, AT&T and FirstNet announced the launch of the Response Operations Group (ROG) dog program, an animal-assisted therapy initiative to support the mental health and wellness of those on the front lines. According to AT&T, the program builds on the FirstNet Health & Wellness Coalition as personnel prepare for the 2021 storm season. (See video.)

First responders experience higher rates of depression, PTSD, burnout, anxiety, and other mental health issues than the general population. The ROG the Dog program is poised to positively impact the mental and physical health of first responders by encouraging them to interact with therapy dogs. Studies have shown that interacting with animals can improve coping and recovery, enhance morale, decrease stress, and reduce the effects of PTSD and emotional distress.

“Nothing is more important than the lives of first responders and the people they serve,” said Jason Porter, President, Public Sector for FirstNet, AT&T. “That’s why we’re bringing ROG the Dog to the front lines for the men and women who run toward emergencies. We understand the service these everyday heroes provide to our communities does not come without burden and personal sacrifice.”

Service animals have always been part of disaster response, and this latest initiative is a new approach to utilizing the talents of man’s best friend. The program includes a fleet of 30 trained Labradoodles stationed across the country specializing in animal-assisted therapy for first responders. The therapy dogs trained for times of crisis following natural or man-made disasters are supplied by partner Global Medical Response (GMR).

“We are proud to partner with FirstNet to provide additional support during the times when responders need them most, giving back to those who give so much for us,” said Rhonda Kelly, National Director, Health, Wellness and Resilience, GMR Life.

Agencies enrolled with FirstNet can request ROG the Dog free of charge by calling 1-800-574-7000.
