Hardened Cell Tower Startup Gains Funding

Former White House National Security Council official Gen. Robert Spalding has told Axios he has achieved $20 million in private funding, led by Goff Capital, for his startup, Sempre, which plans to manufacture a military-grade hardened cell tower.

The tower, which is also a secure network and computing platform, is designed to survive an electromagnetic pulse, also known as a transient electromagnetic disturbance. “Spalding says Sempre aims to offer its customers added computing power by placing a mini-data center at the tower, as well as protection from electromagnetic pulses caused by nuclear attack or solar flare,” Axios reported.

“Sempre unlocks true 5G capabilities by enabling data processing closer than thought possible to the end users,” according to the company. “First-of-its-kind architecture promises security, safety and reliability; the assurance that there will be no data loss or complete infrastructure failure.”

The tower will be built to secure existing networks or as a standalone solution, according to Sempre. Each tamper-resistant tower features a diverse redundant backhaul, a fully hardened 5G core with integrated encryption, real-time processing and compatibility with all current telecom infrastructure solutions.

Who needs this cell tower? Sempre said it is targeting public safety, military and sensitive infrastructure, such as nuclear plants. Along with the retired general, Sempre’s C-suite includes executives formerly employed by the National Security Agency, Cray Computers, U.S. Department of Energy and AT&T/FirstNet, which might give a clue to target markets and the company’s expertise.

“When it comes to security, the Sempre team understands government agencies are bombarded with constant cyberattacks from Nation States and bad actors. The existing network infrastructure is not sufficient,” Sempre said. “After years of observing telcos who are more concerned with faster smartphones than securing infrastructure, our team developed a revolutionary solution that works with both existing networks or as a standalone solution.”
