American Tower and Philips Lighting developed what they’re calling a “Smart Fusion Pole.” Designed for urban areas, the pole provides the necessary infrastructure for wireless broadband connectivity in an aesthetically designed, energy efficient street light pole that blends into the urban landscape.

The companies announced last week that Huntington Beach, CA will be the first city in the U.S. to get the new poles. American Tower has a deal with the city that provides exclusive access to 200 existing light pole locations to deploy the Smart Fusion Poles, mainly along the Pacific Highway and downtown.

“We want to be a leader in smart city initiatives to provide residents, businesses and visitors a better city experience and quality of life,” said City of Huntington Beach Mayor Mike Posey. He says the new poles provide connectivity required for its “smart city initiatives without sacrificing the beauty and vista of our city.”

The Smart Fusion Pole includes concealed integrated antennas that can support services from multiple mobile operators. The device is optimized for small cell deployment, with a plug-and-play design that provides future-ready access for next-generation technologies, such as 5G and the Internet of Things.

Integrated with Philips Hadco and Philips Lumec LED luminaires respectively, the Smart Fusion Poles will also provide high quality and energy efficient light to enhance the spaces where the poles are installed. American Tower and Philips demonstrated the device in Ericsson’s booth at the 2018 Mobile World Congress.
