Two towers are proposed on a hilltop in Halifax County, by Beacon Towers and Tower North Development, respectively, but only one got the stamp of approval. Beacon Towers’ attorney Eugene Lindley asked for a one-year extension to allow the company to complete its tower project, reported the Gazette-Virginian. With that, supervisors voted down Tower North Development’s application for a conditional use permit.
Tower North Development had proposed to build a 195-foot tall monopole, but planners delayed a decision on the conditional use permit application for 60 days following a public hearing held on September 17.
Planners decided to allow Beacon Towers, which received approval for a 195-foot monopole in January, to update planners on construction at its site. Both proposed towers are within 890 feet of each other.
According to the Gazette-Virginian, supervisors gave Beacon Towers time to clear up liens on the proposed tower site. “I would expect a business of this magnitude to have covered all the bases with deeds free and clear,” said Supervisor Stanley Brandon, who favored granting the conditional use permit to Tower North.
However, Supervisor J. T. Davis noted that when approved in January 2019, planners granted Beacon two years to complete the project. “We can’t go back and undo it,” said Davis, adding supervisors have to honor the two-year commitment.
