Rather than shrinking away from the U.S. market following it’s blacklisting by the White House, Chinese telecom giant Huawei told Verizon to pay licensing fees for over 200 patents Huawei claims it developed, according to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ). Although Verizon is not a Huawei customer, the patents can affect vendors of Verizon and other U.S. carriers.
“We trust that you will see the benefit of taking a license to our patent portfolio,” Huawei wrote in a letter to Verizon in February.
The WSJ article said the company wanted Verizon to “solve the patent licensing issue,” over the intellectual property covering core network equipment, wireline infrastructure and IoT technology.
Verizon spokesman Rich Young told the WSJ, “These issues are larger than just Verizon. Given the broader geopolitical context, any issue involving Huawei has implications for our entire industry and also raise[s] national and international concerns.”
