Verizon and Naval Base San Diego are celebrating the installation of a small cell 4G LTE network to improve coverage throughout the base. “Installing small cells on base improves our current coverage, quality of life and lays the groundwork for our future,” said Capt Roy Love, Commanding Officer, Naval Base San Diego, according to Verizon.com.

Both Naval Base San Diego and Naval Base Coronado in California have been outfitted with small cell in-building connectivity.

The current system will also provide the groundwork for the eventuality of 5G service. Verizon said it’s intention is to extend this service to other naval bases. “This investment further solidifies Verizon’s commitment to the mission needs of the Navy through the development and execution of 4G LTE small cells on base,” said Verizon Senior VP of Public Sector Sales, Mike Maiorana.

Captain Love expressed his appreciation for the improved service from Verizon noting, “Having reliable, secure connectivity is critical for Navy personnel at Naval Base San Diego, but it’s also essential for military families living on base and visitors to the base.” On a personal level, families can stay in touch with each other. On a broader scale, the in-building wireless means the ability to upgrade ship maintenance and modernization, with the most up to date training, security, IoT possibilities and the transference of data and systems in real-time.

“With decades of being a world-class provider of communication and mission critical services for national security and military communications, Verizon is uniquely positioned to partner with the Navy to build a network infrastructure that meets their needs,” Maiorana stated.
