“Who wants to make investments in countries where their information will not be protected?” said U.S. Ambassador to Brazil, Paul Chapman. The United States and Brazil have been in talks, reports Yahoo Finance, to discuss the future of 5G, and its funding, in that country.
Expressing security concerns with the Chinese telecom giant, the U.S. has declined to do business with Huawei and continues to discourage other governments from doing so. Chapman told Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo, that a relationship with Huawei was a risk to their national security. He also stated that responsible funding was necessary to “protect data and intellectual property, as well as sensitive information of nations.”
Chapman championed funding through the Trump-created bank, International Development Finance Corporation. The bank was created in 2018, to provide an alternative to China’s Development Bank operations. Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. has worked hard to create a presence in Brazil and has been on scene for the last 20 years. Huawei also announced it would invest $800 million in Brazil’s Sao Paulo state with the construction of a factory, despite U.S. opposition to the project.
Although some countries agree that Huawei technology represents a risk, Yahoo Finance reported many continue to work with the Chinese company. The U.S. ambassador who attended the recent meeting in Sao Paolo, said he was hoping to move forward with funding and installing 5G in South America with gear produced by Ericsson and Nokia.
