Land Owner Faces Un-Neighborly Backlash As Tower Is Approved

Last week, the Connecticut Siting Council approved a proposed 85-foot monopole. According to the New Canaan Advertiser, the council found no conflict between the planned tower and its effects on the environment, public health and safety, and the scenery in the residential area around the site, which concerned some neighbors. 

The tower, proposed by Homeland Towers LLC, AT&T, and Verizon Wireless, will fill coverage gaps. First Selectman Kevin Moynihan spoke about the need for better communications as it relates to safety. 

“I am pleased that the proposed cell tower…has been approved because the need for improved cell service in northeast New Canaan is demonstrable as residents experienced so profoundly due to the tropical storm damage in August with the Eversource power outages and Optimum telephone and internet service outages, especially those working from home due to the pandemic,” Moynihan said.

According to the Advertiser, some neighbors criticized the property owner, Keith Richey, who is leasing to Homeland Towers. However, Richey said he had the opportunity to limit the impact of the tower on the neighborhood. He capped the tower’s height at 85-feet, as opposed to 110-feet tall, and negotiated the size of the base from 5,000 square feet to 1,700 square feet. 

“We negotiated for six or seven months to have the smallest tower, the least visible tower, the smallest compound, with the most screening,” Richey said. “We hope we can get back to normal, friendly relations with our neighbors.” He added that work is slated to begin in December or January 2021, with the tower being operable in May 2021.
