UPDATE LG pledged to issue updates to its phones for three years. The news comes after announcing earlier this week it’s leaving the phone manufacturing business to focus resources in growth areas such as electric vehicle components, connected devices and artificial intelligence.

LG expects to have completed its phone making exit by the end of July, reports The Verge. Existing phones remain for sale.

The move had been rumored for months, following the division’s large losses over five years, according to the account. Once considered a rival to fellow South Korea’s Samsung, LG’s recent high-end smartphones struggled to compete, while its more affordable models faced Chinese competition.

The update promise means the Velvet, Wing, and G- and V- series phones from 2019 or later should be getting three Android updates from their year of release, and “certain 2020 models such as LG Stylo and K series” will get two updates, according to the company. LG has described the announcement as a “three-year pledge” and a “three-OS-update guarantee.”
