When did you begin the association? Founded in 2007
What do you consider to be your focus? To provide a forum for wireless telecom professionals to collaborate on industry issues, including infrastructure, zoning, and regulatory matters, and, when appropriate, to speak with a unified voice on such issues.
How do you try to impact state-related issues? The MDDCWA and its members identify state-related issues and educate stakeholders about those issues. When appropriate, MDDCWA sends representatives to testify before legislative bodies about these issues.
What charities do you serve and why? Over the last 10 years, the MDDCWA has donated more than $175,000 to various local and national charities. In 2017, the MDDCWA donated $40,000 to charities including a $10,000 donation to the Baltimore Rescue Mission in honor of our friend and colleague, Cate Oler. Over the years we have donated to charities connected to our industry such as Warriors4Wireless, charities connected to our community such as Living Classrooms Foundation, and charities connected to our families such as Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. We believe that philanthropy plays a crucial role in our society and connects us as a culture.
What is your top educational/informational event or conference? Our top education event typically takes place in the first quarter of every year. We typically have 200 attendees and the event is held at a venue between Baltimore and DC. Some past events have been held at the National Press Club, the Newseum, and the Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Park. Some of the past speakers have included former FCC Chair Reed Hundt, Morgan O’Brien (founder of Nextel Communications), Jim Young (Crown Castle, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer – Fiber), Jonathan Adelstein (WIA, President and CEO), and Mark Ganzi (Vertical Bridge, Executive Chairman).
What is your top social/networking event? We just held our 9th annual golf outing on September 27 at the Whiskey Creek Golf Club in Ijamsville, Maryland. It brings together over 200 members of the association, as well as friends, colleagues, and community members for a relaxing day of golf in support of various worthy charities. We also generally host an annual evening at Camden Yards and a holiday social.
What is your next event? Our next event will be the Holiday Social to support Toys for Tots on November 30, 2017. This has a been a successful event for many years and provides fantastic networking while annually donating hundreds of gifts for the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program. This year, the event will be held at the Rye Street Tavern in Baltimore.
