Monopine For the Win As Verizon Fills a Coverage Gap in Sedona

Verizon’s proposed solution to addressing what they see as the over-taxed capacity of sites near the Sedona Airport is a 75-foot monopine, according to the Red Rock News. Young Design Corp, an architect company in Arizona, submitted a letter of intent in early February, explaining the need to install the new tower that can support the older airport-based cell site.

Audree Juhlin, Community Development Director, received a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) application for the installation of the tower, but is currently waiting on the state’s third-party consultant company, CityScape, to review the request before it can be heard by the Sedona Planning and Zoning Commission. “CityScape will do an analysis of the application to ensure they are meeting our code requirements and what they have said is, in fact, accurate,” Juhlin said. “They will verify everything for us since we don’t have that expertise on staff. Once we get that back, we’ll do a staff report and present it to Planning and Zoning for consideration.” It is still up in the air as to when CityScape’s review will get back to the city, seeing as the last monopine tower request in Sedona was sent in over a year ago and has still not been seen by the Sedona Planning and Zoning Commission.

Verizon wants to install the 75-foot tower at 75 Kallof Place, right off State Route 89A and South of Natural Grocers in West Sedona. According to Red Rocks News, Senior Planner Cari Meyer believes Verizon chose this property for tower installation because it does not border any residential properties, is far enough from the major highway, and has an ever-present need for more service.
