NAB President/CEO Gordon Smith is said to be recuperating in a hospital after suffering a stroke Tuesday night. The NAB released a statement that said the former two-term Senator from Oregon, “is responding well to treatment, is stable and alert, and is resting comfortably.” His prognosis is good, and he is expected to make a full recovery, according to the broadcast trade association.
The 68-year-old Smith came to the NAB in fall 2009. He signed a contract extension with the NAB in 2017, that lengthens his tenure through March 2023, Inside Towers reported.
Well wishes include FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, who wrote on Twitter: “My thoughts and prayers are with Senator Smith and his family. An excellent advocate for @nabtweets and broadcasters everywhere, but more importantly, a gem of a person. The adjectives are legion, and among them are: good, kind, genuine, thoughtful. Get well soon, my friend.”
His colleague, Commissioner Michael O’Rielly, tweeted he was “deeply upset” at the news. “My wife and I extend our prayers for him to make a full recovery and peace to his family during this time.”
