New Cell Towers for Deutsche Telekom

Major German cities like Nuremberg to rural outposts like Schwanebeck will soon be connected by 5G, and they’ll have the towers to prove it. Over 15,000 antennas have been adapted for 5G and will start appearing on the skyline this week, according to Deutsche Telekom.

“We will have the top 20 cities covered with 3.6 GHz. Going forward, we will leverage other spectrum ranges, such as 700 MHz frequencies. So we have a mix of low band, mid band [and] high band, which is, compared to my competition, significantly better, and we will roll out faster than anybody else,” said CEO Timotheus Höttges. “So, comparing the commitments of Vodafone with ours, we will have four times more coverage already by the end of the year with regard to 5G.”

“We will switch on 5G in 2.1GHz in at least half of Germany already this year. 2.1 GHz is excellent for 5G because this spectrum range combines speed with good propagation,” he added. 5G coverage is already available to 16 million Deutsche Telekom subscribers. The new antenna systems could boost that number to 40 million by the end of the month.

Deutsche Telekom works primarily with suppliers Ericsson and Huawei for antenna components and says it will continue to use those vendors. However, it has said it will be phasing out Chinese telecoms from its core network. Deutsche Telekom differentiates the different aspects of 5G delivery, allowing that cell towers are limited to receiving and transmitting information. Controlling and processing occurs in the core network.
