New England Town Wants Other Cell Tower Options

Westport Point, MA residents pride themselves on their town’s historic character and are in disagreement on where a new cell tower would fit in. As the Herald News reports, Municipal Communication has proposed a site at the intersection of Drift Road and Route 88. However, opponents say that a 150-foot monopole at that location would be an eyesore, even if AT&T disguised it as a pine tree.

“Those of us who have been in opposition to this tower are not opposed to improving service in this area,” stated Main Road neighbor, David Cole. “We recognize that there is a gap and we want it to be filled. Our main point is there are alternative sites that could provide better service.”

At a meeting earlier this month, the Zoning Board met to discuss the proposal. The source noted that there were criticisms from Board members who questioned the need for the project and objected to the suggested location. However, Zoning Board Member, Ray Elias, cautioned the Board that a flat denial could open the town up to a costly lawsuit. The Board will meet next week to reach a final decision.

Municipal Communications said that it had considered other locations but found the other possibilities were not up to the task. The Tripp & Sons boatyard option, they said, would not blanket the area, effectively leaving sections with little or no coverage. The modification of a nearby church could hide the cell tower equipment in a steeple, but would triple the height of said steeple, putting it out of step with the desired historical flavor of Westport Point.

Before reaching a final decision, ZBA Chairman Roger Menard said he would like more information from Municipal Communications, reported the Herald News. Specifically, an analysis of other locations would be helpful, he noted.

Any location selected appears likely to provoke a reaction from residents. “The idea that this [proposed cell tower] can’t be seen on Main Road from Hotel Hill Road is crazy. We all saw it with our own eyes,” said resident Betty Slade at the recent ZBA hearing. “This is a very important part of Westport — the beauty of Westport. This would affect tourism. …This is going to be ugly.”
