costaneraThe equipment manufacturer and carrier recently partnered to deploy a small cell network that reportedly covers the entirety of the Costanera shopping center, — a 168,000 square metered, six-floored building located in the heart of Santiago, Chile – reported iTWIRE.

The deployment was designed to strengthen the center’s 3G and 4G networks by using Nokia’s ‘Flexi Zone small cell technology,’ something the company said is more cost efficient than deploying DAS technology.

“Today’s consumers expect the highest quality of mobile service as an essential part of the shopping experience—allowing them to make voice and video calls, share images and access the Internet,” Nokia said.

The newly deployed network claims to be able to support 4,400 active 3G and 4G LTE per shopping floor, and Nokia said it has increased 4G LTE download speeds by up to 63 times and 3G download speeds up to seven times.

“Telefónica is committed to ensuring our customers receive the highest quality of service. We are constantly looking for innovating technologies to provide the best connectivity to our users,” Gustavo Marambio, Network Director at Telefónica Chile, told iTWIRE.

Costanera is Latin America’s largest shopping center, attracting approximately 110,000 visitors every day.
