Verizon Wireless is requesting a special use permit to build a 195-foot tall tower near Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, and Marine Corps Air Station New River, reported The Daily News. Early in the week of June 8, neighbors near the proposed North Carolina site received written notice of the project.
The letter indicated that the Onslow County Board of Adjustment would conduct due diligence to “ensure the safety and health of the public,” that “the use of the tower can not substantially injure any adjoining or abutting property, and that the tower will be in harmony with the area.” The Daily News reported that the board had not communicated a timeline regarding when it will vote to grant or deny the permit.
Though some residents did not have issues with the proposed project, others expressed major concerns, including worries over aesthetic and environmental impact plus the effects of 5G on wildlife like birds and bees. Other concerns centered on the health and safety of children in the neighborhood. “We have close to 40 kids that live and play in this neighborhood, and I am concerned that those towers release harmful radiation that can cause cancer later on in life,” said resident Shawna Houle.
The Onslow County Board of Adjustment will hold an in-person public hearing on Tuesday, June 23. County Planner Matthew Stuart urges residents concerned about the tower to “bring forth factual information to back up their claims.” Otherwise, he added, the board will not be able to request additional information from Verizon’s representatives to alleviate those concerns. “There is a lot more to it than for residents to say they don’t think it’s a good idea for someone to build in this area,” added Stuart.
