Qualcomm is experiencing momentum in the Internet of Things (IoT) market across consumer, edge networking and industrial sectors, Cristiano Amon, president and CEO, told the company’s fourth quarter fiscal year 2021 earnings conference call.

In consumer devices, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR platforms are powering more than 50 commercial devices, and it is being used in a growing number of virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) ecosystems. Qualcomm has invested in connecting physical and digital spaces with the goal of enablers of the Metaverse opportunity, according to a Seeking Alpha transcript. The OEM’s technology is being used in WiFi 6 and WiFi 6E access points, as well.

“We continue to see high demand for our products driven by home and enterprise upgrade cycles,” Amon said. “We expect this trend to continue as productivity increasingly requires video collaboration, as well as cloud processing and storage.”

Amon said the deployment of 5G, as wireless fiber, is increasing in the United States. For example, Verizon recently announced 5G home internet service availability in 57 markets, including more than 2 million households using the millimeter wave band. In addition, T-Mobile is leveraging its 5G network to target 7 million to 8 million home broadband customers over the next five years, he added. “We’re seeing demand increase globally, making 5G wireless fiber, one of the fastest-growing last mile broadband technologies,” Amon said, according to Seeking Alpha.

On the industrial side, Qualcomm has expanded its IoT services suites to more than 30 verticals, including retail digital signage, payment and self-checkout devices from companies like Square and Clover, as well as solutions from Honeywell, Panisonic, Zebra and others. “These solutions enable new customer experiences, help empower store associates and improve operational efficiencies,” Amon said. The company has had new launches such as the Qualcomm Flight RB5, which Amon said was the world’s first 5G AI drone platform.
