AT&T was denied a special use permit for a cell tower in St. Joseph, MO Monday night by the city council in a unanimous 8-to-0 decision, according to News Press Now. The council members said more unexplored options for a tower site existed in the northeast area of the city. Although AT&T has an antenna located on a Missouri American Water tower near Interstate 29, the carrier said they are having trouble coming to a long-term placement agreement with the utility.

“For business reasons, we have been unable to negotiate a new lease with American Water Company and have made the decision to move forward with relocation plans,” an AT&T spokesperson told News Press Now. They said in order to continue the current service, they are required to be within a quarter-mile radius of their present site and determined the best option was in a neighborhood on Morton Lane.

“There’s a lot of properties and there’s a lot of options,” City Councilman Kent O’Dell said. “[AT&T] said that when they find an actual location, they stopped looking. When they are in places like this, where you’re in neighborhoods, you need to kind of extend your look a little bit more and see if you can’t find a better spot,” he told the News Press Now.
