Should FM Directional Antenna Performance Proofs Get an Update?

UPDATE The FCC would like to know what the public thinks about a proposal to update its directional FM antenna performance rules. Now that the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking has been published in the Federal Register, comments are due this month.

On November 15, the FCC released the NPRM to enable FMs and Low Power FMs to use computer modeling to verify directional antenna patterns. Antenna manufacturers Dielectric, Jampro, Radio Frequency Systems and Shively Labs, plus broadcaster Educational Media Foundation proposed the change, saying it would save station owners time and money.

Currently, the FCC requires FMs to physically test antenna performance to show the facility is operating in compliance with its construction permit to be licensed. It’s an expensive and time-consuming endeavor, according to proponents of the changes, who note the rules haven’t changed since 1963.

The Commission acknowledged the agency allows computer modeling for AMs and TV/DTV stations. It seeks public input from engineers, broadcasters, and antenna manufacturers.

Comments to MB Docket 21-422 are due by December 30. Federal Register publication triggered the due date.
